Indentation University - Session 9: Frame stiffness and Area Function
Two nanoindentation calibrations are accomplished by means of indentation experiments on a reference material. These are (1) the load-frame stiffness calibration, which quantifies the expected flexure in the test equipment, and (2) the area-function calibration which quantifies the precise shape of the indenter. This presentation explains (1) how these calibrations affect nanoindentation analysis, and (2) how the calibrations are accomplished.

Jennifer Hay
Senior Applications Scientist @KLA Corporation
Jennifer Hay is a Senior Applications Scientist at KLA Corporation. Prior to joining KLA, she held similar positions at Nanomechanics, Keysight, Agilent, and MTS Systems Corporation. She received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Houston. Jennifer has worked in the field of nanoindentation since 1996, advancing standardization while also developing methodology for new applications including thin films, polymers, gels, and biomaterials. Mrs. Hay currently serves as the chair for the MEMS/Nanomechanics technical division of the Society of Experimental Mechanics (SEM). She has authored many journal articles on nanoindentation, including an invited feature series in the SEM journal Experimental Techniques.
